전시 설명
《미술로 보일 필요가 없는 작업들과 정치적인 것들》은 시민사회의 구성원이 집단적 주체로 가시화되는 국면에 대해 시각예술의 언어로 접근하고 성찰해보는 전시입니다. 2024년 12월부터 2025년 4월까지 이어진 비상계엄 선포와 해제, 그리고 대통령 탄핵 정국 속에서 광장은 이전과는 다른 감각으로 채워졌습니다. 그러한 변화의 중심에는 응원봉, 케이팝, 이색깃발 그리고 은박담요처럼 기존의 집회·시위에서 잘 드러나지 않던 것들이 있습니다. 새로운 문화를 부상시킨 듯한 이 사물들은 오늘날 한국사회의 민주주의의 역량을 표상하는 새로운 상징으로 자리매김하게 되었습니다.
전시는 이러한 변화로 호명되는 이른바 ‘빛의 혁명’에 대해 지역이라는 위치에서 일정한 거리감을 두고 되돌아봅니다. 특히 서울에서 형성된 ‘빛’의 이미지가 지역에서는 전혀 다른 밀도와 방식으로 재현되었다는 점에 주목하며, 승리 내지는 정상화의 서사만으로는 충분히 설명되지 않는 사회적 현실의 측면에 주목합니다. 네 명의 참여작가들의 작업을 경유하며 ‘혁명’을 수식하게 된 ‘빛’이 어디에서 비롯되었는지 함께 생각해보길 제안합니다.
“Works and Other Political Things Not Necessarily Meant to be Viewed as Art” approaches, through the language of visual art, the moment in which members of civil society today become visible as a collective subject. During the period from December 2024 to April 2025 in South Korea—spanning the declaration and lifting of martial law and the presidential impeachment proceedings—the public square filled with a sensibility unlike anything seen before. At its center were things rarely visible in conventional protest culture: K-pop, light sticks, parody flags, and silver blankets. These elements became new symbols representing the democratic capacity of Korean society today.
Alongside these changes, the exhibition looks back at what has come to be called the “Revolution of Light,” from the position of a region outside the capital, and the distance that comes with it. It draws attention to how the image of “light” formed in Seoul was reproduced and circulated in the regions with an entirely different density and manner, and points to what the narrative of victory and normalization leaves out. Through the works of four participating artists, the exhibition invites viewers to consider together where the “light” in the “Revolution of Light” originated from.
